What happened to Carolina West Wireless
Carolina West Wireless operated for 35 years in Western and Northwestern North Carolina, serving roughly 90,000 lines. In 2026 the company agreed to transition its wireless network to Verizon and stop selling service under its own brand.
The company’s own notice is unambiguous: “CWW service, online account access and customer service end September 30.”
Two pressures drove it. Universal Service Fund support — the federal subsidy that makes rural networks viable — fell by roughly 80%. Owned coverage across its service area dropped from about 60% to about 30% by 2024. At that point the company was buying most of its own footprint from someone else, and selling the network was the only way to keep rural customers connected.
Who took over Carolina West Wireless customers
Verizon. CWW already relied on Verizon’s network, so coverage for customers who move to Verizon stays largely the same. Verizon ran transition support at CWW retail locations and pop-up sites during the changeover window, and offered switching incentives that expired in July 2026.

If you still hold a Carolina West Wireless number
A number can only be ported while the line is still active with the losing carrier. Once CWW’s systems go dark on September 30, 2026, there is no account to port out of and no customer service line to issue a transfer PIN.
Before the deadline: get your account number and transfer PIN from CWW first, then start the port with your new carrier. Do not wait for the last day — a port still in progress when the old system shuts off can fail.
If your number is already dead: it cannot be recovered through CWW. Numbers released back to the pool are reassigned. Your realistic options are to request a new number from a new carrier, or ask the new carrier’s porting department to attempt a recovery — success is unlikely, but it costs nothing to ask.
