How to Unlock a Verizon Phone in 2026

What changed at Verizon

  • February 2026: Verizon briefly extended a 35-day delay to phones paid off in the app, online or at authorized retailers, then said its goal was immediate unlocking for all payment types. How to unlock a Verizon phone

Postpaid

  1. Pay off the device. The unlock is tied to a zero financing balance, or to buying the phone at full retail price.
  2. Use a secure payment method. Verizon says a secure payment method is required to unlock a device immediately. Avoid a Verizon Gift Card for the payoff unless you can wait 35 extra days. [Verizon]
  3. Clear any lost or stolen report. A flagged phone will not unlock until it is cleared. [Verizon]

Prepaid

  1. Keep service paid and active for 365 days.

How to check if your Verizon phone is unlocked

iPhone

Open Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock. No SIM restrictions means unlocked. Apple cannot unlock the phone. Only the carrier can. [Apple]

Google Pixel and other Android phones

Before you switch away from Verizon
