This mobile data calculator estimates how much cellular data you need each month. Most smartphones in the United States use about 25 GB — the current North American average per active smartphone. Your own number depends almost entirely on one thing: how much video you watch when you are not on Wi‑Fi.
Set the sliders below to your real habits and you will have an honest estimate in about fifteen seconds — plus the plan size that covers it with headroom.

Mobile data calculator
Estimate your real monthly usage. Set each slider to what you do on cellular data, not Wi‑Fi — the sliders start at roughly the North American average of 25 GB per month.

Estimates only. Real usage varies with signal strength, codec, screen size and how aggressively each app compresses video. Rates come from the sourced table below — edit those numbers and this mobile data calculator follows them.
How much data each activity uses
Every number below comes from the company that publishes it or from measured web data, not from a rounded guess. The mobile data calculator above reads these rates straight out of this table, so if you change a number here, the calculator changes with it.
| Activity | Data used | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Video streaming — Low quality | 0.3 GB per hour | Netflix Help Center |
| Video streaming — Medium quality | 0.7 GB per hour | Netflix Help Center |
| Video streaming — Standard definition | 1 GB per hour | Netflix Help Center |
| Video streaming — High definition | 3 GB per hour | Netflix Help Center |
| Video streaming — 4K / HDR | 7 GB per hour | Netflix Help Center |
| Social media feed scrolling | 0.3 GB per hour | Estimated at low-bitrate mobile video |
| Music streaming — Normal (96 kbit/s) | 42 MB per hour | Spotify published bitrates |
| Music streaming — High (160 kbit/s) | 70 MB per hour | Spotify published bitrates |
| Music streaming — Very high (320 kbit/s) | 141 MB per hour | Spotify published bitrates |
| Loading one web page | 2.6 MB per page | HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025 |
| Video calling — 720p | 540 MB per hour | Zoom published 1.2 Mbit/s requirement |
Where these numbers come from
- Video: Netflix publishes per-hour data use for every quality setting in its data usage help article. Other streaming services land in the same range because they use the same codecs.
- Music: Spotify publishes the bitrate behind each setting on its audio quality page: 24, 96, 160 and 320 kbit/s. Converting bitrate to bytes gives the hourly figure.
- Web pages: The HTTP Archive Web Almanac measures millions of real pages. The median mobile page reached 2.6 MB in 2025, up 8.4 percent from 2.4 MB the year before.
- Video calls: Zoom lists 1.2 Mbit/s for one-to-one 720p video, which works out to 540 MB an hour.
- The 25 GB average: The Ericsson Mobility Report puts North American usage at 25 GB per month per active smartphone at the end of 2025, against a global average of 22 GB, and forecasts 52 GB by 2031.
Social media is the one activity with no published figure, so the mobile data calculator estimates it at the low-bitrate video rate. Mobile feeds serve compressed vertical video, which is why the number sits well below high definition streaming.
How to use less cellular data
If the mobile data calculator came back higher than your plan allows, four changes account for nearly all of the savings. Everything else is rounding.
- Cap video quality on cellular. Netflix, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok each have a per-app setting for this. Dropping from high definition to standard cuts video use by roughly two thirds.
- Turn off app auto-updates on cellular. On iPhone this lives in Settings → App Store. On Android it is in the Play Store under Network preferences.
- Switch off Wi-Fi Assist or Adaptive Wi-Fi. Both silently move you to cellular when Wi-Fi gets weak, which is exactly when you are least likely to notice.
- Download, do not stream. Music and shows downloaded over Wi-Fi cost nothing to play later.
Common questions
How much data does the average person use per month?
About 25 GB per active smartphone in North America as of late 2025, according to the Ericsson Mobility Report. The global average is about 22 GB.
Is 5 GB a month enough?
It is enough for messaging, email, maps, music and light browsing. It is not enough if you stream video off Wi-Fi for more than about ten minutes a day.
Does streaming music use a lot of data?
No. Even at Spotify’s highest quality setting, an hour of music uses about 141 MB — roughly one twentieth of an hour of high definition video.
Why does my carrier say I used more than the mobile data calculator estimates?
Background app refresh, cloud photo backups, podcast downloads and operating system updates all consume data without any screen time attached. Check your phone’s own per-app data breakdown to find them.
What is deprioritization on an unlimited plan?
Most unlimited plans include a monthly threshold. Past it, your traffic is served after everyone else’s when the tower is busy. The plan stays unlimited; the speed does not. Always check the threshold, not the word unlimited.
