What AT&T announced
AT&T announced the sale from Dallas on October 13, 2026. The buyers are Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings. Quartz, citing Bloomberg, reports that each buyer will hold 50% of the purchasing consortium.
AT&T will receive $2 billion in cash at closing. The amount is subject to adjustments. AT&T also lists “additional contractual and contingent benefits.” The deal needs approval from regulators in Mexico. AT&T expects it to close in the first quarter of 2027.
Until then, AT&T will report AT&T Mexico as held for sale. Its CEO, John Stankey, said the move lets AT&T focus spending on fiber and wireless networks in the US.
AT&T entered Mexico in 2014 and 2015 by buying Nextel Mexico and Iusacell. Fierce Network reports that AT&T has invested more than $10 billion there since 2014. AT&T Mexico is the country’s second-largest wireless carrier, behind Telcel.
Subscriber counts differ by source. Fierce Network reports 23.4 million mobile subscribers. Quartz reports about 24.7 million as of December 31, 2025. AT&T’s announcement does not give a number.
What changes for US AT&T customers
AT&T says nothing changes. Its announcement states: “AT&T expects there will be no changes to the experience U.S. consumer and enterprise customers enjoy today.” Its FAQ says: “There are no impacts to your service related to this announcement.” That includes US customers who travel to Mexico.
Your AT&T account number, your number transfer PIN and your plan stay the same.
What to do now
If you have AT&T service in the US
- Do nothing. Your service and your account are not changing.
- Before you travel to Mexico, check whether your plan includes Mexico use. Look at your plan details in the myAT&T app. Mexico use was not changed by this announcement.
- If you plan to switch carriers anyway, get your account number and transfer PIN first. Postpaid steps are on AT&T Postpaid Account Number & PIN. Prepaid steps are on AT&T Prepaid. AT&T Prepaid accounts do not use a Number Transfer PIN. The new carrier asks for your 4-digit account PIN instead.
- If your new carrier rejects the port, use Port Out Rejected to find the cause. Or look up any carrier’s steps on the port-out tool.
If you have AT&T Mexico service
AT&T’s announcement does not say what will change for AT&T Mexico customers or the brand after closing. Until the sale closes, AT&T still owns the business. BestCellular.com covers US phone numbers. A Mexican phone number is ported under Mexico’s rules, not the US process on this site.
