Amp’d Mobile no longer exists. It was a mobile virtual network operator on Verizon Wireless’s network that went bankrupt in 2007.

Amp’d is gone

Amp’d filed for Chapter 11 on June 1, 2007, after Verizon ended its wholesale agreement over unpaid bills. Service ended in late July 2007.

If you had an Amp’d line

Customers had to port their numbers to another carrier or lose service. Phone Scoop reported that Amp’d customer service helped port numbers without an early termination fee.

No Amp’d account number or transfer PIN exists today. The portability rules in the FCC guide below apply to whichever carrier holds your line now.

How Amp’d Mobile ended

  1. 2005: Amp’d planned to launch in the first week of November.
  2. May 2007: Amp’d had about 200,000 subscribers, and about 80,000 of them were not paying, according to RCR Wireless.
  3. June 1, 2007: Amp’d filed Chapter 11 after Verizon terminated its wholesale agreement.
  4. Late July 2007: Amp’d announced it was closing, and service ended.

The history of Amp’d Mobile

Amp’d was an MVNO, which means it sold service on Verizon Wireless’s network without owning one. That made the Verizon agreement the whole business. When Amp’d fell behind on payments, Verizon ended the deal, and the bankruptcy and closure followed within two months. Sources disagree on how much Amp’d owed Verizon: one says $33 million, another says more than $51 million.

How to find who holds an old number now

  1. Check an old bill or payment record. It names the company that billed you last.
  2. Run the number through a carrier lookup tool. It shows the carrier that holds the number today.
  3. Call that carrier and ask for the account number and transfer PIN.
  4. Start the port from the new carrier. Never cancel the old line first.

Your right to keep a number

Number portability is federal law, not a carrier policy. The rule is the FCC’s: Portability: Keeping Your Phone Number When Changing Service Providers.
