Disney Mobile is gone

Disney announced in September 2007 that it would close Disney Mobile, calling the MVNO model “a difficult proposition in the hyper-competitive” US market. Service and support ran through December 31, 2007.

If you had a Disney Mobile line

Disney offered a reimbursement program for handsets, accessories and content bought directly from Disney Mobile. The sources we found do not say whether customers could keep their numbers.

Disney Mobile used Sprint Nextel’s network, not its own. No Disney Mobile account number or transfer PIN exists today.

The history of Disney Mobile

Disney Mobile sold co-branded Pantech and LG phones with a Family Center for parental controls and GPS. It ran on Sprint Nextel’s CDMA EV-DO network. Disney said it would explore bringing the Family Center product to a major carrier instead. Press reports put Disney’s combined spend on Disney Mobile and ESPN’s phone service at about $150 million.

How to find who holds an old number now

  1. Check an old bill or payment record. It names the company that billed you last.
  2. Run the number through a carrier lookup tool. It shows the carrier that holds the number today.
  3. Call that carrier and ask for the account number and transfer PIN.
  4. Start the port from the new carrier. Never cancel the old line first.

Your right to keep a number

Number portability is federal law, not a carrier policy. The rule is the FCC’s: Portability: Keeping Your Phone Number When Changing Service Providers.

How we verified Disney Mobile

Best Cellular tracks active carriers and defunct ones. We keep both, because people still search for brands that no longer exist. If you can document a correction, tell us and we will check it against the sources.

Tracked and active are different counts on this site. Disney Mobile counts in our tracked total, not in our active total, so it does not appear in tools built for live carriers.
