Voce was a luxury mobile virtual network operator based in Beverly Hills, California, launched in 2006. It charged a $500 sign-up fee and $200 a month, with concierge access and a new phone every year. It closed abruptly around February 1, 2008, without warning its subscribers.

Voce is gone

Voce closed in the week before February 6, 2008. FierceWireless reported that the luxury service “abruptly closed up shop without giving any warning to its subscribers.” Wikipedia’s carrier list puts the end date at February 1, 2008. Subscribers also reported being charged double their usual monthly fee, per a Los Angeles Times report cited by Fierce. Voce had already cut its price to $118 a month before it closed.

If you had a Voce line

No carrier took over Voce subscribers. The sources name no successor. Voce gave no warning, so customers had to find new service on their own in early 2008. A number not moved at the time is almost certainly gone. Any active carrier will work today.

The host network (AT&T) comes only from Wikipedia’s carrier list; the Fierce report does not name it.

How Voce ended

  1. 2006: Voce launches in Beverly Hills with a $500 sign-up fee, $200 a month unlimited minutes, concierge access and a new phone each year.
  2. February 1, 2008: Voce shuts down without warning subscribers (date per Wikipedia’s carrier list).
  3. February 6, 2008: FierceWireless reports the closure and subscriber complaints of double charges.

Why Voce ended

The sources do not give an official reason. They do show a struggling business. Voce started as a premium product: $500 to join, $200 a month, a new high-end phone every year and a personal visit to explain it. It later dropped the sign-up fee, cut the price to $118 a month and made customers supply their own phones. Then it closed with no notice.

How to find who holds an old number now

  1. Check an old bill or payment record. It names the company that billed you last.
  2. Run the number through a carrier lookup tool. It shows the carrier that holds the number today.
  3. Call that carrier and ask for the account number and transfer PIN.
  4. Start the port from the new carrier. Never cancel the old line first.

Your right to keep a number

Number portability is federal law, not a carrier policy. The rule is the FCC’s: Portability: Keeping Your Phone Number When Changing Service Providers.

How we verified Voce

BestCellular.com tracks active carriers and defunct ones. We keep both, because people still search for brands that no longer exist. Every fact on this page comes from the sources listed below, and we leave a detail out when no source states it. Where sources disagree, this page says so. If you can document a correction, tell us and we will check it against the sources.

Tracked and active are different counts on this site. Voce counts in our tracked total, not in our active total, so it does not appear in tools built for live carriers.
