Account Number
Your Cox account number is on your bill and in My Account. Cox Mobile lines sit on the same account as your internet service, so it is the Cox account number, not a separate mobile one.
Transfer PIN
Cox issues a port-out transfer PIN on request — but Number Lock Protection blocks it. Turn Number Lock off first or the PIN will not be released.
Number Lock Protection is the trap on a Cox Mobile port-out
Cox describes Number Lock Protection as a complimentary feature that secures the account from unauthorized transfers of your mobile number and unauthorized SIM or eSIM changes. In Cox’s own words it blocks three things: the Transfer PIN (to port-out to another carrier), swapping a line to a different physical SIM, and swapping a line to a different eSIM device.
That is a real anti-fraud feature and worth having. It also means a port request will fail with no useful error if you leave it on. Turn it off, port, and turn it back on at the new carrier.
How to port your number away from Cox Mobile
- Turn off Number Lock Protection in My Account or the Cox app. Nothing else works until this is done.
- Get your Cox account number from your bill or My Account.
- Request the transfer PIN from Cox. It is separate from your Cox account PIN.
- Start the port from the new carrier, never by cancelling Cox first. Cancelling releases the number and you lose it permanently.
- Keep the Cox line active until the new carrier confirms the number has moved. Cox disconnects the old line automatically once the transfer completes.
Which network does Cox Mobile run on?
Cox does not name it. Cox’s own activation material says only that it runs on “the network 100 million people already count on.” We do not guess, so this row is left blank in our dataset rather than filled from inference.
What is documented: Charter’s Spectrum Mobile, which Cox Mobile is merging into, operates under a long-term MVNO agreement with Verizon for residential customers, with a separate T-Mobile agreement covering new business lines from July 2025. Check coverage on the network your own line actually uses before you commit to a new carrier.

Cox Mobile port-out questions
Why won’t Cox give me a transfer PIN?
Number Lock Protection is almost certainly on. Cox states it blocks the Transfer PIN used to port out. Disable it in My Account or the Cox app, then request the PIN again.
Is the Cox account PIN the same as the transfer PIN?
No. The Cox PIN protects your account with support. The transfer PIN is issued specifically to release your number to another carrier.
Do I have a separate Cox Mobile account number?
No. Cox Mobile lines sit on your existing Cox account, so the new carrier needs the Cox account number from your bill.
Should I cancel Cox before I port?
Never. Cancelling releases the number and you lose it permanently. Start the port from the new carrier and let Cox disconnect the old line automatically.
Does the Spectrum merger affect my port-out?
Not legally — number portability is a federal right. Practically, expect the brand and support routing to change as Cox markets move to Spectrum following the August 20, 2026 close.
How long does a Cox Mobile port take?
Most wireless-to-wireless ports complete within a few hours once the new carrier has a correct account number and transfer PIN. Mismatched details are the usual cause of a rejection.
